Indoor Air Quality: The Longevity Variable Almost Nobody Tracks

You track sleep, protein, and training load, then spend ninety percent of your life breathing air you have never measured. What matters indoors, and what is just marketing.

I bought a cheap particulate monitor mostly out of curiosity. It sat on the kitchen counter reading somewhere between four and nine, which meant nothing to me at the time. Then I seared something in a hot pan, and within two minutes the number went past two hundred.

It stayed high for close to an hour after the food was already on the table.

That was the afternoon indoor air stopped being an abstraction. We measure sleep to the minute. We weigh protein. We argue about zone 2 versus intervals with the seriousness of people arguing about religion. And then we spend most of our lives inside a box whose air we have never once looked at.

The air inside is the air you actually breathe

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans spend roughly ninety percent of their time indoors, and that concentrations of some pollutants run two to five times higher inside than out. Those two facts sitting next to each other are the entire argument.

Outdoor air is regulated, monitored, and published. You can pull up an air quality index for your city in about four seconds. Indoor air is regulated almost nowhere, monitored by almost nobody, and it is where you are.

If you think in engineering terms, the useful frame is dose rather than concentration. Dose is roughly concentration multiplied by time. A mildly polluted room you sit in for nine hours a night outweighs a badly polluted street you walk down for six minutes. A bedroom is not a dramatic environment. It is just a very long one.

What is actually in there

Five categories cover nearly everything that matters in an ordinary home.

Fine particulate matter, or PM2.5. Particles under 2.5 micrometres across, small enough to reach deep lung tissue and pass into the bloodstream. Indoors, the dominant source in most homes is not traffic. It is cooking, especially high-heat frying, searing, and anything that takes oil past its smoke point. Candles, incense, fireplaces, and vacuuming without a sealed filter all add to it.

Combustion gases. Chiefly nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves and unvented heaters, plus carbon monoxide when something is malfunctioning. A gas burner is an open flame in a room, and unless the hood genuinely vents outdoors, the combustion products stay with you.

Volatile organic compounds. A large, chemically unrelated family that includes formaldehyde from pressed-wood furniture and some flooring, along with solvents from paints, adhesives, cleaning products, and air fresheners. Formaldehyde has the clearest health record of the group. The rest range from well studied to barely studied.

Carbon dioxide. Not a toxin at household levels. It is useful as a proxy. Outdoor air sits around 420 parts per million. A closed bedroom with two adults sleeping can drift past 1,500 by morning. That number does not tell you the CO2 is hurting you. It tells you the room is not exchanging air, which means everything else in the room is accumulating too.

Radon. A radioactive gas that seeps out of soil and collects in basements and lower floors. Invisible, odourless, and completely undetectable without a test. It is also the item on this list with the strongest evidence of serious harm.

The evidence, sorted honestly by strength

This is where most writing about indoor air goes soft, so let me be specific about what is actually established.

Strong. Radon exposure causes lung cancer. The US Surgeon General and the EPA identify it as the second leading cause after smoking, and the EPA action threshold is 4 picocuries per litre. Secondhand tobacco smoke causes cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Long-term fine particulate exposure raises cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, one of the most replicated findings in environmental epidemiology, though most of it comes from outdoor cohort studies rather than indoor ones. The World Health Organization's 2021 guideline set the annual PM2.5 target at 5 micrograms per cubic metre, a sharp reduction from its earlier figure.

Moderate. Gas cooking and childhood asthma. A 2022 analysis estimated that roughly thirteen percent of childhood asthma in the United States is attributable to gas stove use. That figure attracted real methodological criticism, because it extrapolated from older studies and from housing stock unlike modern well-ventilated homes. But the underlying association between indoor nitrogen dioxide and respiratory symptoms in children has held up across a lot of independent work. The direction is not seriously disputed. The magnitude is.

Thin or contested. Low-level VOC exposure in ordinary homes, where the honest answer is that we have good data on occupational and high-exposure settings and much weaker data on your living room. The claim that carbon dioxide at office concentrations impairs thinking: a Harvard-led study in 2016 found meaningful differences in decision-making scores under better ventilation, but later work that isolated CO2 from everything else ventilation changes has often failed to reproduce the effect. And air purifiers improving hard health outcomes. Small randomised trials, usually weeks long in a few dozen people, have shown improvements in blood pressure and inflammatory markers. Nobody has shown a purifier extends anyone's life. That study would be enormously expensive and has not been done.

Notice the pattern. The strongest evidence points at sources: radon, smoke, combustion. The weakest points at gadgets.

Purifiers versus opening a window

These two get argued about as though they were competitors. They solve different problems.

Ventilation dilutes everything: particles, gases, carbon dioxide, humidity, the smell of last night's fish. It costs nothing. Its limitation is that it imports whatever is outside, which is a bad trade during wildfire smoke, high pollen, or if you live thirty metres from a motorway.

Filtration removes particles extremely well and does close to nothing for carbon dioxide or most gases. A true HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of particles at the hardest-to-catch size, around 0.3 micrometres. That specification is genuine and worth paying for.

Above both sits source control, and it is not close. Not producing the pollutant is always cheaper than removing it. Industrial hygiene has ranked controls this way for decades, and household air is no exception.

On buying: the number that matters is Clean Air Delivery Rate, the AHAM-certified figure printed on the box. Divide it by your room's volume to get air changes per hour. Manufacturers love to advertise coverage calculated at one air change per hour. Four or five is what you actually want in a room where someone sleeps. A unit rated for a thousand square feet is often a unit rated for one weak air change across a thousand square feet.

Two things to avoid. Anything that deliberately generates ozone, sold as an ioniser, plasma, or activated oxygen device. California regulates these for a reason: ozone is a lung irritant that also reacts with ordinary household chemistry to create new compounds. And any device whose main selling point is a technology name rather than a filtration rating.

The cheapest honest option is a Corsi-Rosenthal box, a box fan with four MERV 13 furnace filters taped into a cube. It was designed in 2020 by Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal. It costs a fraction of a commercial purifier, it is loud, it is ugly, and it moves a genuinely large volume of filtered air. I would rather have one of those running than a beautiful silent unit with an undersized filter.

A room-by-room audit that costs almost nothing

Work through this once. Most of it takes an afternoon.

Kitchen. Find out whether your range hood vents outdoors or recirculates through a charcoal pad back into the room. Look for a duct. A recirculating hood does very little for particles and nothing at all for nitrogen dioxide. Turn the hood on before the pan gets hot rather than after smoke appears, and use the back burners, where capture efficiency is considerably better. If you have no hood, crack a window on the kitchen side of the house.

Bedroom. Your highest-dose room, purely by hours. If the door and windows are shut all night, you have a sealed box. Leave the door open, crack a window, or run a filter. Look under the bed while you are there, because that is where dust settles undisturbed.

Living room. Count the candles, the plug-in fragrance devices, and the incense. Any product whose purpose is to add molecules to the air you breathe deserves a moment of thought. Note new pressed-wood furniture, which off-gasses formaldehyde most heavily during its first months.

Bathroom and laundry. These are humidity questions, which are really mould questions. Does the extractor fan actually move air, or just make noise? Hold a square of toilet paper against the grille and see whether it sticks. Is the dryer vented outdoors?

Lowest floor. Buy a radon test. In the US, short-term kits run roughly fifteen to thirty dollars and many state health departments give them away. This is the single highest-value item on the entire list, and it is the one people skip, because it is boring.

Garage. If it is attached, check whether the door into the house seals. Cars, mowers, paint, and solvents live in there. Never idle a vehicle inside, even briefly, even with the garage door open.

Whole house. If you have forced-air heating or cooling, look at the filter. Upgrade to MERV 13 if your system's static pressure tolerates it, and set the fan to circulate rather than auto. You already paid for that ductwork. You may as well use it as a whole-home filter.

What actually changed in my house

Not much, and that is somewhat the point.

The hood goes on before the burner does, every single time. It took about three weeks to stop feeling like a chore, and now I do not think about it. A MERV 13 filter went into the furnace. A filter runs in the bedroom, because eight hours a night is the only exposure I can influence at that scale. We stopped burning candles in closed rooms. We tested for radon.

I did not buy a whole-home system. I did not replace furniture. Chasing the final ten percent of this problem is where indoor air stops being health and starts being a hobby with a subscription attached.

There is a version of this that curdles into anxiety, and it is worth naming. Sitting down to meditate one morning in a small closed room, I noticed the CO2 reading climbing and caught myself watching the number instead of settling. That is a worse outcome than the air was. So I moved the monitor. The window gets cracked before I sit, and then the instrument is out of the room and out of the practice.

The air in your house is not an emergency. It is a slow variable, which is exactly why it stays invisible and exactly why the small fixes compound. Open the window. Turn on the hood. Test for radon. Then go and do something else.

FAQ

Do houseplants clean indoor air? Practically, no. The famous NASA experiment was run in sealed chambers, and later analysis showed you would need something like a plant every square metre or two to match the effect of simply opening a window. Keep plants because they are good company. Do not count them as air treatment.

Is a cheap PM2.5 monitor worth buying? As a teaching tool, yes. Low-cost laser sensors are not laboratory instruments and their absolute numbers drift, but they are good at showing relative change, which is what you actually need. Watching the number spike when you fry something teaches more in a week than any article can.

Should I replace my gas stove? Only if you were replacing it anyway. Venting properly captures most of the benefit for far less money. If you cook heavily, have a child with asthma, or have a hood that does not vent outdoors, the case gets stronger.

What if the outdoor air where I live is worse than the indoor air? Then invert the advice. Keep windows shut through bad periods, lean on filtration, and ventilate during the cleanest window of the day, which is often early morning. Check your local index rather than guessing.

How often do filters really need changing? More often than people change them, and a loaded filter is not a working filter. Furnace filters roughly every three months, HEPA units on the manufacturer's schedule, pre-filters more often if you have pets. If it looks grey, it is overdue.
